讲座内容介绍:

Many countries have set 2050 net-zero target, and in order to meet the target, a dramatic expansion of renewable energy is required, e.g., in the UK, up to 40 GW offshore wind by 2030 and 80 GW by 2050 are being planned. Most renewable sources use power electronics converters to connect to the electrical networks, which have very different characteristics compared to conventional power generation. Thus, to ensure secure and resilient of future power system, potential risk of adverse converter interactions must be tackled. This presentation will discuss the issue of voltage stability in future converter dominated power network, in the context of UK. The concept of converter impedance will be introduced and the method of using impedance for assessing system stability will be described. Typical impedance of converter systems will be presented and examples of system instability due to interactions of converters in close proximity highlighted. Finally, selected mitigation measures will also be introduced.

主讲人简介

Lie Xu is currently a Professor at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, UK, and head of the power electronics and energy conversion (PEDEC) research group. His main research interests are in the design, operation and protection of HVDC transmission systems, integration of large offshore wind farms and power system stability with large converter penetration. He started his career with ALSTOM T&D UK in early 2000s developing VSC based HVDC system, and has led significant numbers of research projects on HVDC system and offshore DC network supported by research councils and industries including UK EPSRC, EU H2020, UK National HVDC Centre, China EPRI, Carbon Trust, etc.

Prof. Xu has published over 100 journal papers in leading IEEE transactions and IET journals, has a H-index of 51 with over 15,000 citations (Google Scholar). He is also an editor of the IEEE Trans. Energy Conversion and IEEE Trans. Power Delivery, and an Associate Editor of the IET Renewable Power Generation.
